“Dragon” is in the name of the game after all.

I have been fortunate enough to roll up the Dragon encounter on my worldbuilding hexes. There’s actually a cluster of hexes where my d12s were particularly hot and rolled all dragons. The question becomes is it one dragon? A cadre of Dragons? A draconic empire of some sort, maybe?

All of my cat-related dragons who roam freely about their various territories. Each is somewhat tied to the land they inhabit. Some are actually spirits of the land and are specifically tied to their territory. Many major landmarks have a dragon spirit or guardian attached to them as is well known to the locals.

Dragon Week is a community shared creation effort among YouTubers and old bald white dudes from the Midwest flyover states. It was originally created by Ginny Di and Pointy Hat. Last year was Kraken Week. Not really my jam, but… This year is Dragon Week! Woot! Anyone can participate. Guidelines for getting involved here.

It has been established that there were some not-so-friendly dragons in the past that might still be around. Most of them are larger all the way up to kaiju sized. Tetsu Doragon and Karyuu are well known dragons that roam the world and could potentially show up anywhere. They are more traditional dragons that we are used to from Dungeons & Dragons at least in appearance and some behaviors.

Also owing to the cataclysms of the past, at least one Plutonium Dragon and one Uranium Dragon still exist somewhere in the world, probably amidst the radioactive nightmares they have caused. At least they have no known offspring.

Where the feline dragons have varying motives and agendas, the reptilian dragons are almost all pure evil. Some of the more metallic appearing dragons have a neutral attitude and can border on friendly under the right circumstances. They all have a story of their own as this is Dragonbane after all. There are no alignments to be concerned with.

One funny thing about Dragonbane dragons is their relationship to demons.

It is established Dragonbane lore that Dragons and Demons typically do not get along with one another. It doesn’t mean Dragonbane dragons are angels or all goody-two-shoes, but they minimally seem opposed to demons and demon kin. I’ve considered making some sort of winged eyeball dragon that more closely resembles a Biblically correct angel, but that might be getting a bit too close to real religion.

I think Dragonbane dragons operate under the principle that the enemy of my enemy is my friend when it comes to demons. Most creature likely team up to fight demons when they can. But there’s one dragon that I’m porting over from ye olde Dungeons & Dragons cartoon as a homebrew that breaks all the rules when it comes to demons and dragons.

I will be publishing the stats for this absolutely terrible monstrosity sometime soon. I’m speaking of the nearly demi-godlike Demodragon. Half demon, half dragon, all hateful and full of spite. If anyone remembers the Treasure of Tardos episode, we get to see Demodragon. I don’t think that should have been the thing’s final form, though. It needed wings. Tentacles were a nice touch.

My Demodragon will have some aspects of Tiamat if she mated with Cthulhu and the baby was raised in the Nine Hells. I also have a Venger-esque character that the group back in the Misty Vale might have to deal with someday (along with the rules for warlocks.) I’d like to work Tiamat into Dragonbane, probably under a different name and appearance. (We wouldn’t want to offend Wizards of the Coast.)

I think every fantasy world should have some lore around its dragons. It might be as short as, “no one knows anything about dragons because there aren’t any,” to “there are many mythical stories around dragons and great woe to anyone who encounters one.” We will undoubtedly uncover more dragon lore in this new world in the days and months to come.
