What’s Going On Outside of the Game.
It’s easy for a lot of us old timers in the hobby to forget that most players, especially the newer Dungeons & Dragons players do not give a rip what’s going on outside of their game. Many, many players don’t follow TTRPG news and views on X (Twitter,) Reddit (cringe,) YouTube, and other social media. Most of the new crop of 5E and later players don’t want D&D news beyond release dates, memes, new broken character builds, and maybe some tidbits such as Ginny Di’s latest Instagram post. (I pick on Ginny a lot because she’s really good and I honestly admire her influencer skills.)
On the other side of the coin we have old guys like me who follow what Wizards of the Coast fouled up this week, scandalous pages in Sly Flourish’s Forge of Foes, and what Harmony Ginger had to say about the culture war. Yes, I’m guilty of all the above. I usually don’t talk about Harmony, but I very much respect her opinions and she’s an awesome content creator.
Disclaimer: This is my blog. This is how I see things and how I feel. There is little factual information being presented. If you have issue with anything being presented, please contact me privately on X (Twitter,) Instagram, BlueSky, or by email. Otherwise, there are lots of platforms out there for you to vent your feelings and opinions, too.
I would say the vast majority of Dungeons & Dragons 5E onward enjoyers just don’t know or don’t care what’s going on in the rest of the hobby. Heck, some of them don’t even know there are game alternatives to D&D. Gotta love em. If they just want to show up on time every week with their maxxed-out characters in hand to play the game; more power to them.
For all the other Game/Dungeon Masters out there, please keep it out of the game. Leave all the online or social media drama around the industry at the door. Your players will be better for it. If people want to discuss that sort of thing, do it after the session outside of the game. It’ll keep the overall vibe at the gaming table higher and probably prevent arguments.
I’m keeping this short today. I’m finding out that, um… I’m just not very good at this stuff? I dunno. See tomorrow’s article for details. I hope you have a lovely game this weekend if you are planning to get together. I’ll be designing a monster and chasing kids all over creation.
Thank you for being here today with me. I appreciate you. Please embrace the things that bring you the most joy.
