You don’t hear it at first.
Just the soft, papery whisper of wings where wings do not belong.

Lanterns dim when they draw near. Fires gutter. Shadows stretch in the wrong direction. Some swear it’s a demon wearing the shape of a moth. Others insist it’s an omen made flesh, a punishment for lighting the dark too boldly.

Whatever the truth, the Sabretooth Moth Man Oni hunts by light and fear, and it is very good at both. Sometimes it’s an omen, other times it’s the grim servant of death.

Appearance

Tall and broad-shouldered, the Oni’s body is wrapped in vast, dust-shedding wings patterned like burial shrouds and cracked stone. Its face is disturbingly human, framed by twin sabre-length tusks curving from its jaw weapons meant not only to kill, but to lift and carry screaming prey into the night.

Its wings leave a pale residue on skin and cloth, cold to the touch and faintly acrid, like old ash.

Behavior

The Oni stalks slowly, circling lantern-lit camps and lonely roads. It prefers to strike suddenly, scattering prey before committing to a brutal assault. Once blood is drawn, it presses the attack relentlessly, especially against those carrying light.

Other times it appears as a warning that a great tragedy will follow. Provoking the creature can prove deadly. Sometimes the best choice is to freeze in place and let it make the next move.

Silence makes it patient. Fire makes it angry. Those who survive an encounter with the Mothman Oni normally only ever see it once in their lifetimes.
