Deep in the Green: Three Forest Villages You’ll Want to Steal for Your Campaign

Forests are more than just backdrops of shadow and leaves. They breathe, whisper, and shelter, not only wildlife, but entire cultures that have learned to thrive under their canopy. This week, we take a look at three unique forest settlements, each no larger than 200 souls, but rich in character, culture, and a deep-seated reverence for the natural world.

These are not towns of conquest and walls. These are places of harmony — where elves, cat folk, and dwarves live with the forest, not in spite of it. Whether you’re running a nature-themed Dragonbane campaign or just want to get away from stone castles and cobbled streets, these communities might be just what you need.

Syvälehti

Inhabitants: Elves

Inspiration: Kelethin (EverQuest) with Norse-Japanese forest temple fusion

High in the canopy of the whispering Urthwilde stands Syvälehti, a sprawling network of elegant elven structures built into and around the trunks of towering glass-bark trees — pale-limbed giants with leaves that shimmer like windchimes. The elves of Syvälehti do not fell trees but grow their homes through guided druidic shaping, bending saplings with song and coaxing boughs into bridges and domes over generations.

Unique Feature: The Breath Gate
At the village’s heart hangs a woven gate of living vines called Hengitysportti (“breath gate”). It vibrates with faint pulses and responds only to those who exhale with calm intent, a sacred reminder that only those in harmony with themselves and the forest may pass. It leads to a meditation grove suspended by root-lattice hammocks and used for dreamwalking and ancestral communion.

Key Figures:

  • Vaari Meluthiel, a “Tree Listener” elder who interprets the moods of the forest through the scent of leaves and the sway of the canopy.
  • Tella Mosscloak, a mushroom cultivator and spore-ink artist whose murals on tree bark record centuries of weather patterns.

Nyano-Take

Purring with life, Nyano-Take is a vertical village nestled within a grove of thick-bamboo and flowering timber. Unlike the elves’ architectural harmony, the Cat Folk of Nyano-Take embrace playful chaos. Rope bridges swing between platforms with an almost mischievous layout. Homes are stitched with vine-silk and draped in colored fabrics that flutter in the wind.

The village smells faintly of incense and jasmine. Beneath each home is a net of mossy hammocks where cubs and elders nap through the hottest hours. Strangers are approached with cautious curiosity, but eventually welcomed as long as they are not a threat to the way of life around the settlement.

Unique Feature: The Whisker Shrine
At the village’s highest point sits a natural boulder wrapped in colorful strings and tiny bone charms. Called the Whisker Shrine, it’s believed that a cat’s longest whisker placed there guarantees a successful hunt or happy romance. Visiting the shrine is part rite-of-passage, part dare because reaching it requires an unsupervised night climb through the treetop canopy.

Key Figures:

  • Miyako the Many-Tailed, a rogue-turned-priestess known for her nine braided tails (most are artificial, for ceremony).
  • Fishhook, an acrobat and trap-setter who refuses shoes, armor, or names longer than two syllables.

Stensvett

Inhabitants: Forest Dwarves

Inspiration: Primitive survivalist dugouts with Norse-Dwarven aesthetics

Deep beneath the forest floor, often undetectable from above, the dwarves of Stensvett dig their homes from the roots of fallen trees and naturally eroded earth. Their structures resemble nothing more than mossy pits or sunken logs from the outside. Within, however, these homes are marvels of underground design: earth-tempered walls, root-laced ceilings, and communal steam-lodges carved into stone.

Stensvett’s dwarves are squat, quiet, and fiercely loyal. They believe the fallen tree is sacred — not in death, but in transformation. Each “Rootden” house is dedicated to a specific tree ancestor, and the story of that tree is etched into the walls in stylized knot patterns.

Unique Feature: The Ember Core
Beneath the village lies an ancient, dormant emberforge — a natural lava pocket that radiates gentle warmth. The dwarves built a geothermal sauna and smokehouse over it. Not only is it a place of health and relaxation, it also serves as a forge for bone-carving and resin-hardening, creating beautifully functional tools and jewelry.

Key Figures:

  • Thorka Roottongue, a lorekeeper who carries a scroll made of interwoven bark strips and sings tales in rhythmic growls.
  • Rullin Greasehands, the village’s chief tinker, who creates mechanical traps powered by weighted vines and dripping sap.
