Here’s a new d12 Table just for fun.
When the group finds themselves wandering down the trail, on their way to their next adventure, sometimes things don’t always go quite as planned. This is a trail encounter for a temperate forested area. Usable with Dragonbane RPG.
Mundane Encounters:
- Venomous Asp: A random member of the party steps too close to a snake on the edge of the trail. The group (passive) or the affected individual may make an Awareness check to see if they spot it in time to prevent the unfortunate person from being bitten. Otherwise the character takes 2 points of damage plus Potency 9 Lethal. If the character is mounted their mount takes the damage instead. The affected character or steed will be considered Sickly until the next Shift rest once an antidote is given. (Bushcraft or Healing may be applied in lieu of an antidote.)
- Itch weed: Thick nettles, sumac, or poison ivy plants grow tall and thick on both sides of the trail. A successful Bushcraft check prevents the party from suffering skin irritation. Any member of the group with thick body hair, fur, clothing covering the arms and leges, or armor should be okay. Anyone making contact with the plants who has unprotected skin must roll CON or be considered itchy until the next Shift Rest and the plant poison can be neutralized.
- Mud: Recent heavy rains have left the trail covered in thick mud. Wagon wheels risk getting stuck, horses can slip, trip or even get stuck. Players may roll Bushcraft to go around, but either way travel time is reduced by half until they clear the mud.
- A game small game animal (squirrel, rabbit, etc) or game bird (pheasant, quail, duck, etc) appears up ahead on the trail. This is an excellent opportunity for a Hunting/Fishing check.
- One of the players determined randomly finds a hole by stepping in it. The affected character must make an EVADE roll or suffer with a Sprained Ankle. (A Demon results in a Broken Leg.) Half movement until a Shift Rest and medical attention can be provided. If the character is mounted, the mount suffers the injury instead. Use RIDE instead of Evade.
- Battle Remnants: The group may make a SPOT HIDDEN check to reveal one Improvised weapon and one random Treasure Card.
- Lost Traveler: Roll for Kin, Profession, etc randomly. They have become separated from their trail guide and have no idea where they are going. They may ask to join the group until another town or village is reached.
- A pack of 2d6 wild dogs begins to follow the group waiting for an opportunity to steal some food or maybe even attack a straggler.
- A huge brown bear wanders onto the trail ahead. It might not be instantly hostile. Roll for NPC attitude. Friendly becomes curious.
- A group of 5 Human bandits pose as a family of travelers with a broken wagon. (See “Typical NPCs for stats.) The bandits will reveal themselves and strike as soon as the group stops to help and are dismounted, etc. They usually don’t kill everyone or fight to the death, however.
- A family of goblins has legitimately broken down on the trail during the night. A wheel has come off their wagon. Now that the sun is up, they are struggling to get it back on. They are an honest goblin family of a father, mother and two daughters. The daughters have minor injuries suffered when the wheel broke off and they were thrown around with the trade goods in the back of the wagon. They are waiting until nightfall to fix their wagon and resume travel. They might offer a reward for some assistance.
- 1d6 Large game animals (deer, elk, bison, reindeer, etc) wander onto the trail somewhat near the characters. It’s a good chance to observe nature or get some use out of Hunting/Fishing skills.
