An RPG that’s quick to learn: Shadowdark RPG.

This game is so simple that it could have just as easily come in a red box with a dragon on the front cover. It jumps right into the game terms, equipment, and a bit of skill/combat resolution. Then the book dives right into character generation. By the time we get to Page 41, we have a full-fledged, ready-to-go character in hand. (Minus spells for spellcasters, but that’s an easy fix.) It really makes 3-5 editions of the ampersand game look like homework.

Character in hand, you’re now ready to plunge the depths of caverns and search for loot. This game is so quick to get into. I’ve already designed monsters, character classes, spells, and a weapons guide to go with it. It’s the old school attitude with fast, simple, fun rules to go with it. I can think of a handful of games that come close, but few are as quick to dive into the nitty gritty as fast as Shadowdark.

I was a fan of this game clear back in 2021 when it was still in its conceptual phases. Kelsey Dionne did a marvelous job writing this book. Later chapters make the life of being a Game Master pure joy with this game. Obviously Kelsey has spent a lot of time behind the screen and has figured out when to just roll random and go with something.

Thank you for being here today with me. I appreciate you. Please embrace the things that bring you the most joy.
