RPG with well supported campaigns: Uh, yeah…

I know what most people will probably put down for this prompt. It’s almost expected. I just can’t do it. Too much focus has been placed on the ampersand game as of late. They could bring back Birthright, Oriental Adventures, Dark Sun, and Al Qadim tomorrow and it wouldn’t change how I feel about that one company. Those writers at old T$R knew how to make a campaign setting.
Back in the old days of the 1970s and 1980s, they didn’t have social media cancellation campaigns. They put out the campaign setting and we either bought the book or we didn’t. It either made money or they moved onto the next thing. It’s something the company in charge of said ampersand game only wishes they could do now.
I’m glad we live in a time of other fantasy RPG systems.
I was super excited for Shadowdark RPG and Dragonbane when I got them. Here are a couple of RPG systems that don’t have a ton of expectations heaped on them already. They readily convert to old pre-conceived campaigns and are ripe for the creation of brand new ones.
I have a fantasy campaign setting running around in my head the likes of which has never been seen before (to my knowledge.) Someday I’m going to unleash it on the world, but only when I’m ready. Building a campaign setting is as much a labor of love for a GM as it is a challenge as a designer. It’s a little like parenting in that I have to be ready to unleash it on the unsuspecting public.

Thank you for being here today with me. I appreciate you. Please embrace the things that bring you the most joy.
