Most often played: Star Wars D6 from West End Games.
This one is a really tough call. Must be a sign of old age. I had to think about it for a long time before I decided on Star Wars. AD&D 2nd Ed, D&D 3rd Ed, and ICONS all come very close. Cyberpunk 2020, Deadlands, and Werewolf: the Apocalypse are way up there.
I’ve just named seven games I never get tired of running. Star Wars D6 has only faded in relevancy because it is out of print and therefore out of the RPG zeitgeist. The Star Wars D6 RPG egregore fell apart when Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro picked up the franchise and turned everything d20. That was about the time MMORPGs took off and Star Wars went a bit quiet as a franchise for a few years,
See also: Disney happened. I won’t rehash my opinion of Disney’s Star Warsh here. (That’s my new name for it now.) Let’s just say the first two trilogies are fair game for RPG settings, then we just say, “good enough.” I won’t touch anything after Return of the Jedi.
My favorite era is everything before and through The Clone Wars. I especially love having competent Jedi characters chopping up things with their lightsabers. There’s so much unexplored, open territory in that part of the Star Wars Universe to keep a campaign going for years. Then we could get into “What if” scenarios and alternate timelines.
The same could be done with a Rebellion Era campaign. My friend ran a game where I think canon went out the window during the first or second session. IIRC Luke died, and the group had to take down the first Death Star and eventually Vader. I think the game ended with the destruction of the second Death Star. Something like that, anyway. I wish I had been there.
I still catch myself writing little notes for Star Wars campaigns.
What if Grievous lived? (Cloned?) What if Anakin never became Vader? What if Vader blew up with the first Death Star? These are just some of the campaign jumping off points I have considered. That, and I love having excuses to bring back the Trade Federation and their Battle Droids. Roger, Roger!
I have a lot of ideas, but alas no system is currently being produced for that particular Intellectual Property, and I’m not sure I want to see one. Disney’s Star Warsh is pretty… uh… They, uh… Well, I don’t think I want to see what happens. Not to mention who they’re probably going to hand the thing off to eventually. The license is overdue to change hands again.
