First game purchased this year.

Salvage Union by Leyline Press. I had a little bit of cash left after the holiday season and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Now that it’s been in my hands for a while, I have zero remorse. I might never get to play/run it, but I think it’s pretty darn cool.

Salvage Union is a game about mecha pilots who travel the vast post-apocalyptic wasteland in search of scrap and other bits of the previous civilization. The main goal is to collect scrap, keep everything working on their mechs and their Crawler all while serving the Union. A Crawler is the term for the giant walking commune that the mech pilots live in/work for. It’s a giant rolling city.

I think Salvage Union has some solo potential. I especially like the idea of Crawler management and the various mishaps that affect the entire community on board. It reminds me a lot of Mutant: Year Zero in those regards. Check out the M:YZ review here.

I’ll be doing a full review of Salvage Union likely in September. I think it got a bad rap from some reviewers in the community and I almost didn’t buy it because of those reviews. Likewise, I almost backed the Kickstarter for this game and then backed off in favor of a project that still hasn’t come out.

I promise the game is worth checking out. Salvage Union features simple mechanics with just enough crunch or more if you like planning and logistics. The mech combat is not the focus of the game, but rest assured there could be plenty of it. It’s a well rounded game in terms of story, characters, backgrounds, and overall playability.
