This fine specimen comes to us by way of Mutated Monsters from Dice Dungeons LLC.

First, this variant on the standard Dungeons & Dragons Bulette comes to us from the Mutated Monsters book. I would like to take a chance to again thank the writers of Mutated Monsters for all of their efforts. My review can be found here. The book can be purchased via DriveThruRPG in PDF Format.

[The regular Dungeons & Dragons Bulette is listed in the SRD5.1. Fair Use under CC-BY-4.0. The Wasp Bulette is being shown for review purposes. ]

It’s pronounced, “Boo-LAY.” Although I hear bullet and bull-eat a lot, too. It’s all the same land shark either way.

I’ve been rocking these creatures for years.

(They’re originally from the Elemental Plane of Earth- get it?) My 1st Ed AD&D and 2nd Ed AD&D players all the way up through 5E will tell you I have a fondness for this monster. My Shadowdark adventures will eventually include one or a pack of them. I think they make a good acid test for how well low level characters tackle tougher problems.

The Wasp Bulette is a slightly smaller version of its rock guzzling cousin. While these won’t burst through the ground and drag an unwitting adventurer under or swallow a halfling in one bite, the Wasp Bulette are just as terrible. These Medium sized monsters are normally encountered as hives. On top of a vicious knockdown attack, they can sting the unwitting adventurer.

Thanks, I’ll take my chances (as a PC) with the regular ones. Then again, Mutated Monsters turns all those monsters we’re all used-to into a super scary nightmare shadow of what it was. As a DM, I’m so looking forward to using these things someday. Right now it’s looking like Shadowdark might get a conversion of them.
