These Huge monsters are intended for a High Fantasy game.

Because I am currently working on my BRP Design Challenge entry, but I love Shadowdark RPG, Old School Essentials, and Dungeon Crawl Classics, we’re going to make these system agnostic. These encounters could also be adapted to a science fiction setting with a little effort.

[Content Warning: Sharks, Spiders, Snakes]

Roll 1d12 and consult the table below to see what the group runs into.

  1. The air is filled with a thunderous roar and a sense of ominous foreboding as a gigantic dragon can be heard in the distance. Nearby animals run for cover. Birds stop chirping. The massive beast can be seen coming from almost a mile away. It seems to be searching for something.
  2. Nearby trees and bushes become increasingly covered in strands of wire and metallic floss. The source of the mess becomes apparent if the group presses onward. 3d8 Metal spiders, approximately 5 or 6 feet in diameter each. Each has an oily venomous bite and sprays wiry metal webs that it can electrify to incapacitate its victims.
  3. The ground shakes as a mighty stampede of bovine herbivores thunders through. The creatures themselves are harmless, but they weigh upwards of 1 ton and can trample the players. The bigger question is what startled them?
  4. Strange sounds the likes of which have probably never been heard in the realm echo for miles as a giant with a pole for a body and three mouths emerges. This creature seems to be at least partially mechanical, but its exact physiology is a mystery. It will attempt to pick humanoids up with its long spindly arms and claws, however.
  5. A freak blizzard starts up almost directly above the group’s heads. What’s causing it? A rogue air elemental? Some sort of paranormal disturbance? Weather magic?
  6. A Storm Titan descends from somewhere on high as noted by the explosive thud of his landing near the characters. He has sensed their presence and will ask them to kindly leave his domain.
  7. A devastating earthquake tears through the land. It’s a completely natural disaster, but leaves nearby buildings leveled and enormous cracks in the ground.
  8. A panther roughly the size of a house stalks the land in search of its next meal.
  9. The smell of sulfur and ash fill the air as a giant fiery snake descends upon the land, perhaps having been summoned or perhaps escaped from the Elemental Plane of Fire.
  10. 1d10 huge airborne sharks hunting in a pack as they fly through the air as if it were water.
  11. A Giant Ant hill can be seen nearby. It is teeming with life and poses a threat to any nearby settlements.
  12. The largest possible Carnivorous Dinosaur comes stomping across the land in search of food.
