Yet another controversy, this time in the TableTop Miniatures WarGaming community.

Because, holy crap, we can’t go an entire week without being upset over something. This time it happens to be a new miniatures line for Games Workshop’s famous Warhammer 40,000. This is why we can’t have nice things on the Internet, I guess.

For frame of reference, I used to play WH40K. Orks were my first army, then Blood Angels, then assassins, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle, Necrons, and Eldar. Of those minis I retained my Orks and Necrons along with a few pieces that I painted or planned to paint. Most of my figures are metal, not plastic. I played back when Necrons were still undead in space and Orks were of slightly smaller stature plus a lot goofier. I used to play Orks when all of our big weapons and psykers did weird stuff. I got out of the game when everything became “just artillery.”

Low key wishing the majority of my figs weren’t buried in storage so I could show you all the weird stuff we used to have for the Orks. That, and I keep wondering if I kept my metal Sisters of Battle. I know I kept my Imperial Assassins. Those were good times.

Got sidetracked. Let’s talk about female Space Marines.

Long story short? Games Workshop owns the property. They create the lore. They have the right to change the lore to whatever they want, whenever they want. We don’t have to like it. We do have to live with it.

For those who don’t know, Games Workshop recently retconned female space marines into the Adeptus Custodes. Am I upset about it? Nope. Long overdue if you ask me. They should have done it 30 years ago when they brought Sisters of Battle into the game.

It doesn’t diminish the gameplay, the setting, or the IP in any way, shape, or form. To tell GW, “You can’t do this!” is just ludicrous. Much as I say any time Wizards of the Coast does something stupid, it’s not the fans’ call to make.

Oh noes, a bunch of angry fans will never buy their product again. Oh noes, they’ve gone all “wokies.” Guess what? They don’t care. GW is getting so much free press off of this one tiny lore change, it’s not even funny. They probably couldn’t pay for this much publicity.

Next week this particular headline will probably be buried.

Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast in due to release their Q1 numbers on the 24th. CEO Cynthia Williams’ last day is the 26th. I’ll say it again for those who don’t know me. THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS COINCIDENCES! The boat looks like it might be going down and that particular captain is not going down with the ship.

I’m sorry, but nothing Games Workshop does is going to compare to what’s probably coming for WotC next week or shortly after. With a little luck Dungeons & Dragons will land in the hands of someone more responsible, assuming there’s any staff left to create the game. WotC will probably be praying for any kind of headline to distract from what could be a public relations trainwreck. While we don’t know exactly what’s going to go down, many are speculating it has to be grim if the CEO bailed out; last day on the Friday after the Q1 earnings are released.

More on the WotC conspiracies later. Games Workshop hasn’t had this much publicity in ages, not even after dumping my favorite fantasy armies from the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar game. While I don’t buy GW minis or paint any more, I have a lot of friends who do. It’ll be interesting to see what changes come about that positively affect the hobby after this.

Thank you for being here today with me. I appreciate you. Please embrace the things that bring you the most joy.
