In a world where magic is fairly common, what creature would be strange?
Wikipedia defines Cryptids as, “Cryptids are animals that cryptozoologists believe may exist somewhere in the wild, but whose present existence is disputed or unsubstantiated by science.” Now, in most fantasy TTRPGs, science really isn’t a thing (yet.) So, what wouldn’t they have discovered yet?
I’m going to go with my default fantasy TTRPG these days- Shadowdark RPG. In official Shadowdark, divination magic is practically unheard-of. (Not counting unofficial supplements, of course.) No divination magic, crystal balls, ESP, or pesky Locate spells getting in the way means there are plenty of creatures above as well as below ground that no one has discovered yet. Let’s build three creatures that people claim to have seen.
The Peopaht
This creature has the head of a platypus; the shoulders and front legs of a wolverine; the torso of a hairless mammal; and finally, the back legs and tail of a blue lobster. While this creature isn’t hostile, it has been known to take fish from baskets. It will also talk to fishermen before disappearing back into the water. Others claim it’s a drunkard fisherman’s excuse for coming home with an empty basket.

The Ebon Skeleton.
“It’s just a skeleton”
Except it’s 7 feet tall, ebony stone, wears plate armor, carries a longsword and a shield. Oh, and it’s never been destroyed or turned. The coat of arms and décor on the armor has long since faded or been scratched or scored off. If its cohort is destroyed, it just walks away. It has never spoken or gestured to anyone attempting to talk to it. Its armor, weapon, and shield seem to be fused to its bones.
The mystery of this being is compounded by no discernible necromancer who created it or a point of origin.

Undead. Immune to morale checks.
Enchanted Obsidian: Immune to fire, non-magical weapons and turning attempts.
The Butterfly Seal
This very bizarre humanoid seal has the wings of a monarch butterfly. Those who have seen it say it’s a harbinger of certain doom. Sometimes it appears at sea right before a shipwreck occurs.
