Wizards of the Coast just couldn’t make it a whole month, could they?
- Technology investment giant Tencent may have its eye on part or all of the Dungeons & Dragons Intellectual Property. Tencent owns approximately 30% of Larian Studios, creators of the Game of the Year- Baldur’s Gate 3. While Larian doesn’t have enough capital to buy D&D on its own, they did put Tencent onto what could be a very beneficial deal for WotC/Hasbro.
- There is an as-yet unsubstantiated rumor that Wizards of the Coast may have floated a new contract to Third Party Content Creators behind the scenes. One of the rumors that I’m still attempting to verify is that this is actually a new Game License for the new 2024 Dungeons & Dragons, possibly not an Open one.
- Foundry VTT has announced a partnership with Wizards of the Coast to bring 2024 Dungeons & Dragons onto their platform. Some industry sources have claimed this is an indication of behind-the-scenes licensing deals.
- Jeremy Crawford announced today that the new Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Player’s Handbook will not be coming out May 21, 2024, as was leaked on social media during Pax Unplugged 2023.
- A large, fiery controversy has sprung up in the TTRPG community on YouTube and X (Twitter) involving Grim Jim and the ugly side of cancel culture after a very ugly article by a well published sociologist was revealed briefly before being taken down. Since then, this article has received a lot of press for something people have to go into the internet archives to find. Go figure.
- YouTubers and TTRPG social media pundits alike are now taking turns nitpicking and complaining about MCDM’s $4.6 Million crowdfunding campaign for their as-yet untitled D&D killer. It sounds a lot like jealousy to me, much like when Kelsey Dionne hit $1.3 Million on Kickstarter with Shadowdark RPG. (*Can’t we all just praise success and understand there’s room for everyone in the TTRPG industry?)
- Eldritch Automata, a game about giant robots fighting Cthulhu-esque abominations has unfortunately fallen short of its crowdfunding goal. Bummer.
Thank you for stopping by. I certainly appreciate you being here. Back to editing for me. Embrace that which brings you the most joy today.
