A system neutral TTRPG sourcebook by Tom Pigeon.
I bought a physical copy on Amazon.com, but you can also find the digital version here on DriveThruRPG.com. You can also find it on the company’s website www.wordmillgames.com
My first impression was sullied by the buffoons that delivered my order. The envelope it came in was battered, wet, and torn. Thanks, Amazon. I owe ya one. My physical copy was a bit battered when it arrived. It’s still usable, but I’m somewhat annoyed at the condition.
Concise, short, and very functional.
I really like that this book gets straight to the point and asks the critical questions early on. It’s system neutral, so there’s no longwinded explanation of mechanics and even the random tables port over into most games seamlessly. This book doesn’t futz about with a lot of unnecessary explanations and basically assumes the GM is smart enough to do the crunchy stuff on their own.
I was impressed there was even room for a couple of really nice examples toward the back of the book. That’s keeping things tight for a 32 page manual. This really is a great little book to grab a couple of d10s and/or percentile dice and rock out something quick and utterly bizarre for the group to encounter.
I think it works extremely well for fantasy, as it was probably intended, but could easily slide into a sci-fi or post-apocalyptic game as well. I’d have to really spend some time tweaking things for modern horror, though. I’m looking forward to using it with Cypher System fantasy for sure. I may even mess around with it a little building a Power Rangers monster sometime just to see if it would work for that.
Go check out The Creature Crafter if you get a chance. I think as a $4.95 pdf it’s well worth the investment. Please be careful where you order a physical copy from. It’s a little less durable due to the low page count.
Thanks for stopping by today. I appreciate it a lot. Please embrace that which brings you joy.
