Prior to the WotC D&D OGL Debacle of 2023, my answer would have looked a lot different. However, Shadowdark has recently filled the void left by 5E of the world’s most well-established TTRPG. I would also give props to Dungeon Crawl Classics in all of its splendiferous meatiness.

I’ve talked about Shadowdark before here on my blog. It’s a neat little system that does a lot of things other fantasy TTRPGs have tried to do only better. It’s so much fun, I took part in the first Itch.io Shadowdark Independent Game Jam which was a great deal of fun.

The Shadowdark license is a breeze to deal with compared to a lot of other games. There are fewer hoops to jump through and The Arcane Library is a breeze to deal with compared to some other companies’ licenses. It really helped me to finally put something out there publicly for the first time.
