At the risk of sounding arrogant, my favorite con modules where written by me. In particular was a Star Wars RPG (WEG) game that involved a Star Destroyer carrying a payload of experimental weapons. I don’t 100% remember all of the details because it was almost 30 years ago, but I did run it at more than one convention.
Before it was all said and done there were three key factors in what was essentially a horror scenario set in the Star Wars universe. First, there was a deadly bioweapon on board that had broken loose and required several decks of the ship to be quarantined. Second, there was an alien xenomorph that broke containment and was running amok on the ship. Last, there was a rogue assassin droid determined to destroy the ship and crew. Plus, the rebels had to rescue a scientist who wished to defect to the Alliance.
I was always amazed at the different approaches to the scenario. It was fun to run because I had to keep track of the Imperials, the droid, the xenomorph and what was going on with the ship. It was a challenge to write and worth every minute of prep, revisions, and convention time running it. Most players seemed to enjoy running it.
Obviously, I’ve run many other games in many other systems at conventions since. I try to stay away from vanilla D&D at conventions because it is so common even now. If I had to run a pickup game these days, it would very likely be Old School Essentials, Shadowdark, EZD6, ICRPG, or maybe Dungeon Crawl Classics. All of the games I just mentioned have pretty basic character creation and easy scenario development tools attached to them. I miss the good old days of D6 Star Wars and Amazing Engine Bug Hunters.
This prompt makes me think maybe I should write down some of my convention experiences and a few of the tips I learned from the pros at the dozen or so conventions I’ve been to. (Sorry, I don’t get out much these days, but I used to live to write convention modules.) I also used to help people with one-shots and game prep when I wasn’t doing my own thing. There was a lot of interesting experience there.
Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you have a smooth week, and the Universe blesses everyone with loving abundance. I appreciate you.
