WOOT!
August brings us #RPGaDay2023. I discovered this list on one of the variou social media platforms that I still frequent and thought it might be fun. Please feel free to follow along if you’d like. We’ll be talking about other things this month as well.

The first game I ever played and became instantly obsessed with was Marvel Super Heroes RPG. Obviously the original from TSR. I was talking comic books with one of my friends, and he mentioned the game. I had to try it. Dungeons & Dragons followed the next day. Then my friends talked me into running games. 41 years later, here we are.

I still have my original boxed sets and dice. My dozens if not hundreds of characters are still around here in my files, too. At least most of them are. I had some neat concept characters in MSHRPG that transferred over to DC Heroes, Heroes Unlimited, Champions, Mutants & Masterminds, ICONS, and others. They are all my characters, so they show up as NPCs most often.
I spent some time as a MSH player in high school. They were lower powered games. IIRC, no one had above an Unearthly score in anything. More often they were all Poor through Amazing if you remember the old power scale. We played organic characters and ranked up points at a time. I remember playing completely straight rolled organic characters, too. It was a matter of making a backstory compatible with whatever bizarre series of character generation rolls we had. It was sort of like MSHRP in Hardcore mode.

The Ultimate Powers Book is still far and away one of the all time best sourcebooks written for any game. It added incredible amounts of depth and options for MSHRP games. Not to mention every and any super power one could think of from Marvel comics along with cool power stunts. It also set an example of how amazing supers roleplaying can be.
The new Marvel TTRPG is coming in August, I think? I’m excited because it sounds like the designers might be going back to the old school way of doing things where you might have the option to play the canonical Mighty Marvel characters OR make your own. I’m a huge fan of making my own supers.
I have an entire ICONS universe that I’ve built slowly over the years. All of it stems from my early teen years being obsessed with Marvel and DC Heroes TTRPGs. My friends and I were always trying to play characters from one universe that weren’t in the other. I.E. we brought Wolverine, Iron Man, and the Punisher over to DC and our Marvel game got Superman, Wonder Woman, and Star Man. (I was a big Will Payton fan at the time.) Then DC and Marvel did the Amalgam universe and my friends and I got to see a lot of our concepts brought to life with different names. Good times.
Thanks for stopping by. I’ll be doing my best to keep up on these #RPGaDay prompts this month. I hope you’re having a lovely day. Please be safe, have fun, and roll some dice for me. Thanks!
