For Cartoon Action Hour Season 3.

Around nine years ago I created a lot of short series for Spectrum Games Cartoon Action Hour Season 3. One of them was called Space Surfers. I looked through my original notes to recreate it for Indie RPG Month. It’s intended to be very tongue-in-cheek, low violence cartoon fun.

Name: Space Surfers.
Tagline: Catch some cosmic waves, dude!

Dials:

  • Seriousness: 1. The idea is to keep it really lighthearted and cheeky, dude.
  • Realism: 1. People on surfboards in space. Let’s not get into the science too closely.
  • Violence: 2. Somebody might get punched. Robots are fair game for anything.
  • Continuity: 2. The first, middle, and last two episodes are connected. Otherwise, episodic.

Star Power: Superheroic. 26 Points for Traits
Free Powers: Each character starts with a Space Board. (Flight, Space Flight.) a Wetsuit (Force Field, No Need to Breathe.) and Sunglasses. (They look cool. Protection from Bright Lights.)

Prohibited Traits/Powers: No weapons of any kind. Some weapon-like powers and traits based on beach toys are available for characters at the GM’s discretion. Examples: shovels, volleyballs, beachballs, badminton rackets, buckets, etc.)

Trait Limit: PC’s may start with ONE Trait at Level 6 or two traits Level 5.

Theme Adherence: Surfers. We’re going to say, “dude” a lot. Anything beach/ocean themed. Fun, teenagers, surfer kids, 1980’s teen aesthetic when not surfing.

Heroic feats and powers include magic, light manipulation, sound manipulation, energy manipulation (similar to DC’s Green Lantern,) and cosmic surfing action (Marvel’s Silver Surfer.) Make it cool. Relax and roll with the waves.

Episode 1 (and the Series opening theme song and credits scenes):
Magic Moon Doggie Daddy, the too cool for school lifeguard. Bruno the Bully and his Bully bots cause trouble all over the place. Moon Doggie said, “Come be a surfer in outer space.”
They packed up Woody with their boards and their gear.
Moon Doggie said, “Hey come on up here.”
And now they’re surfers in outer space. Guarding lives and being cool. They’re really ace.
Space Surfers, surfin through space. So, dude come and catch those cosmic rays.
We’re gonna hang with the Surfers in outer space. Yeah…

This is just one of many series I have created for Cartoon Action Hour Season 3. If you can’t tell, I really love this game. Sometimes I think I relate better to cartoons than I do real life. (*nervous LOL.)
